Organic is best... right?

There's a lot of marketing out there that is telling you that if you want to eat healthy, organic food is the way to go. And in some ways, they are right. But in others, organic is no more beneficial to you than conventionally raised produce or meat. If you are looking to buy crops that are not genetically modified or meat that has consumed GMOs, then you should buy organic. But did you know that organic does NOT mean free of chemicals? The USDA has a whole list of chemicals that are legal for use on organic crops, including paracetic acid, ferric phosphate, soap-based algicides, and sodium silicate, just to name a few. Now, I know all those things sound like crazy scary chemicals to a non-scientist. But the fact of the matter is that all these substances have been studied and approved by the FDA, as have the chemicals used in conventional agriculture. I understand if you're still skeptical of them, and the chemicals used on conventional products. I might still be skeptical about a few of them myself. But if you're truly worried about consuming the chemicals applied to your produce, here's the most simple thing you can do: wash it! Whether you buy conventionally grown products or organic, the best thing you can do before you eat them is to wash them. And if you are worried about eating meat that has consumed these crops, you have to be willing to shell out the money for organic. So whatever your preference, next time you are at the grocery store, try looking past the label and try to think about what they mean and how YOU can do to make the food you eat better. And if you would like more information on what is allowed on your food you can always visit the USDA website
